Scholarship Opportunities at ChristUMC Farmers Branch

DSJ Memorial Scholarship

The David Scharlau, Shaun Guier, and Joel Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in January 2002. The fund is in memory of three young men, who showed us what it meant to be kind hearted, service oriented, and generous in their friendships. Even though they left us way too soon, their spirits continue to serve others through this scholarship fund.

David (April 11, 1976-January 25, 2001) is the son of Will and Kathy Nieberding. Shaun (June 13, 1977- August 7, 1993) is the son of Dr. Marvin and Kathy Guier. Joel (January 27, 1974-November 28, 2021) is the son of Joe and Doris Williams.  Together with their families, David, Shaun, and Joel were all very active members of Christ Church.
Through these scholarships we are able to remember David, Shaun, and Joel by providing opportunities to persons from the active member families of Christ Church for study at an institution of higher learning. The recipients of the DSJ Scholarships may be persons graduating high school, attending any level of university, trade school, or graduate school. The primary criterion is need, followed by academic information, honors and activities in school, church and community.  Since May 2003, fifty-five scholarships have been awarded, totaling $102,500 to date.
On behalf of the board, we’re grateful to Christ UMC for supporting this scholarship fund and to all who have made donations to the fund, which are the reasons we are able to continue to give each year.

The committee is now accepting scholarship applications for the current year. Applications can be completed online clicking the button below.

All young men who are and have been members of Christ United Methodist Church of Farmers Branch, Texas for not less than two years and who graduate from an accredited high school or home school study program are eligible for selection of scholarships to be used for tuition, room, board, or related expenses for college or trade school in the fall of the year in which the scholarship is awarded. Those currently enrolled in college or trade school may also be considered.
The criteria for this scholarship include your involvement in CUMC or another United Methodist Church, service to your community, high school scholastic achievement and activities. The committee has decided to weigh CUMC involvement more heavily than other factors. The selection will be made without regard to race or national origin. To be considered, each applicant must submit a completed application (see download link below), an essay and letters of recommendation. These must be received in the Church office by April 20th to be eligible.

United Women in Faith Scholarship

Supporting the education of Christ United Methodist Church’s young women with scholarships for graduating high school seniors has been a mission of the United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women) since 1999. The amount awarded and the number of scholarships presented is determined directly by the donations received during the annual fundraising drive.
The criteria used to evaluate scholarship awards includes both monetary need and the amount of involvement and participation in CUMC activities, along with academic performance. The scholarship is designed for a Christ United Methodist Church member. Selection will be made without regard to race or national origin.
The women of CUMC United Women in Faith are passionate about supporting the young women of our church to achieve their educational goals.  These scholarships are awarded on Graduate Sunday in early May.
